Youth Music Week - Music is Power - 09/11/2009
This year's Youth Music Week is extra special because, just like PMZ, Youth Music is also celebrating its 10th anniversary. Plymouth Music Zone is one of 21 so called 'Youth Music Action Zones' throughout the whole country that receive funding from Youth Music to deliver many of our free or subsidised activities. Youth Music Week is about everyone celebrating the achievements of the young people we work with. This year's message is MUSIC IS POWER so watch out for PMZ because we'll be out and about at various events giving interactive workshops and handing out something called a 'PMZ Power Pass'. Get yourself a PMZ Power Pass and it'll give you access to many of our after school activities. Youth Music Week is in the week beginning Nov 9th and we'll be kicking it off by launching the new Plymouth Music Forum here at Plymouth Music Zone on Nov 10th. Look out for details of other activities going on and happy birthday Youth Music!

Plymouth Music Forum - 25/09/2009
Plymouth Music Zone will be giving a home to the Plymouth Music Forum due to be launched at a top Music Industry Showcase event that attempts to put the Plymouth music scene on the map. PMZ's development director, Debbie Geraghty, has been invited to chair the new forum and bring together people from all corners of the music sector. The Plymouth Music Forum will be an important voice in pushing forward a strong vision for music in the city. The forum is due to have its first meeting in November so watch this space for what happens next...

Triathlon Tour De Force - 14/07/2009
A lecturer from Plymouth University could teach us all a few lessons about how to use an Olympic Triathlon to raise money for charity...Dr Clare Pettinger successfully crossed the line after a gruelling 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run - all in aid of PMZ. In fact, Dr Pettinger didn't just manage to finish the Triathlon but she even won her swimming heat in the process in the less than warm Plymouth Sound off Mount Batten. The whole adventure was caught on camera so copy and paste this youtube link and see the trials and tribulations. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0jfX6KO4cc Clare has raised £375 for Plymouth Music Zone and we promise the hard fought funds will be put to very good use - it's the equivalent of 5 workshops for around a hundred adults with special needs who we currently don't have any funding for. So congratulations Clare and thank you from everyone at PMZ!

Scarf Goes a Long Way to Raising Money for PMZ - 28/06/2009
It took a year to make but it took a matter of minutes for the longest scarf you're ever likely to see to raise hundreds of pounds for PMZ. The woollen wonder was knitted by a woman called Yvonne Ellis who lives in Torquay. Yvonne has learning difficulties and spent so long making her scarf because she wanted to raise money for charities all over the world. The idea was for charities to be able to ask people to pay money to guess how long the scarf is thereby raising money for each charity that gets it. The person who guesses correctly then gets to nominate where the scarf should go next. Yvonne is collecting photos from every charity it helps to follow the scarf's travels. Yvonne's scarf brought in over £200 at our 10th anniversary event and will be moving on soon to the winner's charity of choice. Andrew from PMZ's Roof Raiser's choir guessed nearest to the correct length and is thinking about the scarf's next move...

2009 WINNER OF NICK THOMAS MEMORIAL AWARD - 27/06/2009
One of PMZ's longest standing participants has won the 2009 Nick Thomas Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement. 19 year Zoe Fell was awarded the accolade at our 10th anniversary 'PMZ in the CarPark' event in front of a packed crowd. The award is in its third year and was set up to commemorate the life of a young musician who died suddenly from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome). The memorial award aims to recognise outstanding achievement in music but also how a young person uses music to make a difference to other people's lives and to PMZ. Among Zoe Fell's many achievements is the fact she successfully raised the funding for all the 10th anniversary celebration events through PMZ's Youth Forum, TEMPO. The other two finalists were Josie Newton and Mac Balogun. Zoe said "I was really shocked, it was really nice to be recognised as I don't normally expect that so it was really great." Congratulations Zoe, well deserved!
