PMZ RECOGNISES ACHIEVEMENT AT ANNUAL AWARD CEREMONY

26th April 2017

A young female singer whose voice has been described as 'stunning' was among those recognised at Plymouth Music Zone’s annual awards event. The special celebration evening was held in front of a packed audience at the charity's Devonport base. The organisation created the annual event to celebrate the most outstanding of the hundreds of participants and partner organisations it works with every year.

The Nick Thomas Awards event is a unique evening of dedications, performance and films and culminated in the announcement of winners of 3 different awards.  The winner of this year's 2017 PMZ Nick Thomas Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement was 16 year old singer, Jasmine Tyson.  Jasmine was also a finalist in last year’s awards and has been involved with PMZ for 7 years.

The Nick Thomas Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement recognises musical talent as well as the way in which the nominee uses their music to help others and the work of PMZ.  It was first created in 2007 in memory of a young musician called Nick Thomas who died suddenly from an undiagnosed heart condition known as ‘SADS’.  Nick’s mother, Jenny Thomas, has supported and fundraised for the award ever since.  She was at the event and presented Jasmine with a handcrafted trophy and certificate as well as framed certificates to the other finalists.

The second award of the night was The Lynda MacPherson Inspiration Award created in memory of a woman who inspired others. She used singing in the last few months of her life to overcome the effects of a stroke. The accolade recognises inspirational older people who have shown outstanding courage in the face of adversity through using music to enhance their own life and the lives of others. This year the award was presented to husband and wife, Charlie and Margaret Martin, along with Trevor Dunn. All of them attend PMZ's weekly Stroke Association singing group.

The third award at the celebration evening was the 2017 PMZ Perfect Partner Award. It recognises the importance of exceptional partnership work to the charity’s success. The awards celebrate immense dedication, passion and hard work helping PMZ to deliver high quality creative music making projects that change lives. This year’s winners are Lee Sewrey, Manager, Caring For Carers; Helen Fellows, Opportunity Knocks Coordinator, Colebrook (SW) Ltd; and both Mary Smith and Amanda Summers-Evans from City College Plymouth.

All the winners were presented with bespoke trophies created by local mosaic artist, Jane Stevens. Finalists also received framed certificates.
